Tips for running an effective training seminar

Planning a training seminar takes a lot of work – but the truth is, it’s the best way to really make it count and ensure your participants feel the event was productive, helpful and beneficial. Here are some tips from the team at Idle Winds, a top conference venue near Johannesburg.

  • Know your goal: Ask yourself exactly what it is you want to achieve with your training seminar. Are you helping build leadership skills? Are you training people in a new type of software or programme? Are you trying to bring a team together to communicate properly on a project? Knowing your goals will help keep the seminar focussed and clear.
  • Give yourself enough time: Firstly, you need enough time to develop your workshop properly, and secondly, you need enough time to teach your participants properly. If your work is going to take 3 days to learn, don’t try squash it into a single afternoon.
  • Make a list of your requirements: Know exactly what equipment you are going to need and how much of it is needed, and make sure your partners or your venue is able to provide it. You might need AV equipment for presentations, printed manuals, or notepaper and pens – whatever it is, make sure well in advance that it will be there, rather than relying on participants to bring it themselves. And always have extra or backups where possible!
  • Mix presentations with hands-on training: Rather than using your seminar as a lecture, try to reinforce new techniques through hands-on learning. Getting trainees involved in role-playing scenarios, solving problems or asking questions about approaching different challenges makes training more effective and long-lasting.
  • Book your venue: Working at a venue that is not the office is very beneficial to the learning process – not only does it create a sense of excitement and a break in routine, it also helps trainees move out of their daily office mind-set and focus on new things. It is also a great way of preventing interruptions.
